5 Ways to Green Your Boat
Manitoo Pontoon Boats is building pontoon boats, from small 18″ boats to a bit large 27″ pontoon boats. Their focus is to constantly improve and innovate, a focus which we always appreciate. They are all powered with big outboards, so we were surprised to find a article about how to green your boat.
Environmental concerns
With environmental concern on the rise, green products and practices are in growing demand. Consumers are focussed on green products, both for in their daily use, as well as during their holidays. As we always see here, a lot of information about green cars and green homes is available, but we can still use a lot more information about green boats. Therefor I had hoped that Manitoo would do a bit more with their own boats, but I guess this is a start.
Manatee comes up with 5 tips. Their tips fall in the categories “use non toxic products”, “reduce energy consumption” and “generate renewable energy”. Of course these tips are very useful, but probably something we are already doing, or don’t have the possibility to do. For instance installing enough solar or wind power on a boat is just not feasible for most boat owners. If you live in a very sunny place and only want to use your boat for a couple of hours, there is no problem. But if you want to make longer trips, you do have a problem.
Learn from others
In the nautical industry we should make sure we continuously learn from others, in this case other industries. Or perhaps look for ways to better work together. Tesla is doing a great job to make electrical cars more and more available for the masses. For example this solar charging station just opened in Vermont. If this works for cars, it can just as well works for boats too!
So asking how to green your boat might not be the right question. Perhaps the better question is: how the change / green the boat infrastructure! We will keep that in mind.
